UPDATE 5

I pulled my distributor - pulled the TFI off -

did a test of all the internal resistances according some info I found on the web - the all passed....

was kinda hoping it'd fail...

I can buy anew module for about $55...

Lot of money for a stab in the dark - with little evidence supporting the decisions...

On the other hand, I hear these things fail often and a new one isn't a complete waste...

But I'm having doubts that it'll fix my problem...

got it running!

Swapped out the TFI - engine fired right up.

Can't BELIEVE that was the problem. I can't imagine I did anything to kill it while fixing my headlight short - short's been there since I bought it a year ago.

??? maybe ? Either that or it was a 1 in a million coincidence.

Either way - thanks to all for your help.

bashby - I see you're in George Town WV - I'm live in Mass, but have been there many times - my uncle lives in George Town.

Small world.

It's Charles Town, named after Charles Washington, Georges brother.

Ooops - I knew that.

I always make that mistake

And it's my uncle Charlie that lives there - you'd think that'd make it easier for me to remember!
