Nope!!! That's the way they came from the factory...

 

I've only owned 5.0's, so excuse my ignorance...but what is that thing?

 

muffler for the AIR system.

 

I'll add that the location of those smog components on top of the motor like that indicates that the pic is of an F250/F350, if it were an F150 those parts would be down beside/behind the motor and the muffler is on the passenger side inner fender.... and it would be located the same for any of the available engines.
