front parking lights

Does anyone know whether the front parking lights are supposed to be illuminated when the headlights are on? On our truck "Becky" (details below) the front parking lights are on with the headlight switch pulled to the first detent, but are off when pulled out fully to turn on headlights. Thanks.

They are not. The more lights syndrome started later.

Thanks for the info. Truck had a lot of electrical problems when we bought it and was not sure whether there was another one to decipher.

As a side the truck has halogen headlights; do ya'll think there should be a relay installed to protect the switch?

My F100 failed the government-mandated inspection when I imported it from California for these reasons:
-Parking lights go out when headlights turned on.
-No brake lights unless ignition on.
-No high-speed wiper operation.
-No brake lights unless pressure applied to pedal.
They didn't get the $119. I went to a guy with grey hair and passed!

No inspection required on classics in North Carolina so do not have to take truck to those seeking to sell you repairs you do not need.

Is your headlight switch original or has it been replaced? I replaced mine with a D3ZZ-11654-A (1973 vintage) from Dennis Carpenter and am running Sylvania cheapie halogen headlights with no problem. I remember reading somewhere a long time ago in a Mustang tech article about certain later model (than 1966) headlight switches being able to handle greater current draw without the dreaded circuit breaker cut out going into effect. So if you have a later switch you may be OK. Then again, your results may vary. It may be worth a try. Good luck!

It is fairly easy to make them come on with the headlights if you want them to. Just run a jumper wire on the headlight switch from the tail lamp circuit to the parking light circuit. That way, whenever the tail lamps are on, the parking lamps will be on.

I did this to mine recently. I like it. I will never put any stupid side marker lights on it though! Just sayin......

The headlight switch issue is not limited just to pickups. I was driving a Ryder rental Ford big truck in the mid 80s through West Va. one night and it started doing it. I knew what it was and kept the hammer down. I have driven Fords long enough to know that the electrical designers there were reading bad info along the way.

I like & recommend the relays added to the headlights. You have more power with less draw to the switch when installed.

I did the relay upgrade as well and used headlamps that use H4 bulbs. If you look at the picture, my headlights are actually white instead of yellow like they used to be.
