is there any difference in harmonic balancers from different years of 460 engines, as in size or balance(internal-external) from the 70s to the 90s and are the front covers the same except for the fuel pump mount on efi covers.
The external balance 460's use a neutral balance "harmonic balancer". (The balancing lobe is a seperate piece.) The part number is a D9 number, meaning it probably is different than the earlier ones though.
The front cover went through a lot of revisions. The 70's covers have provisions for a dipstick, later ones can't have a dipstick. The oil pan to cover bolts changed shortly before the fuel pump mount was closed off. (Early oil pans use larger "corner" bolts.)
is there any way to determine if my 460 is internal or external balance; besides having balanced at a shop. this engine was missing the front cover, balancer and spacer(neutral or weighted?)
the engine had a flexplate and torqueconverter on it, I did not see any type of weights on either of them
What year is the 460? 79+ are external. Did it come from a car or truck? 78 was the last year for cars, so those are all internal. What's the casting code on the block? If it starts with D9, then it is a 79+ truck block.
Does the flex plate only bolt on one way, or can it be rotated to other positions? I know the external balance engines have one bolt offset a bit so that the flex plate only mounts one way. I don't know if the internal balance ones are the same or not, but if the flex plate mounts multiple ways, then it must be internal balance.
I have no idea what this engine is out of. the guy I got it from did not know anything. The block casting code is D1VE-A2B. The head casting codes are D3VE-A2A. I also found several no. in the valley
They are as follows; A024, 101, 13578in a circle.
This eninge had a front sump oil pan on it so it may have been in a car? The pistons in it have a dish the size af a bathtub in them indicating 73+. as for the flex plate it will only bolt one way but as noted before it didn't have any weights on it. If i could determine the year it would be reall helpfull in getting parts for it I.E.front crank spacer, dampener and front cover.
Some more about the front cover. At some point in the early 80's, the front seal was changed to one that installs from the outside. The old design was installed from the backside - which necessitated removing the cover to change the seal. I think Ford's updated service replacement for the '70's cover uses an externally installed seal.
