I have a few questions about timing sets. My truck needs to have its timing set changed. So I figured I buy a set that will give me more HP and Torque from my stock engine. I have a 1979 F250 with a 460 in it. What kind of specs should I look for in a timing set. What other things should I look out for as well. Such as, should I have to worry about changes in the timing of the engine. Right now the timing is 14 degrees. Will advancing the timing increase the HP and torque. Will a timing set for a pre 71 460 be compatible with the 79 460? Thanks everyone.
First off, since you have a 79, you will want to buy a pre-'72 timing chain set. In 1972, EPA regulations went into effect and Ford had to change the timing between the cam and the crankshaft for emissions. You can set the cam and crank timing 'straight' with a pre-72 set. You will still want to set your timing to what the sticker shows once you get it all back together.
