another odd gas guage post

I yanked the 19 gallon tank out since the gauge didn't work and upgraded to one of the 38 gallon tanks. I did the needed modifications to the new sendin unit to work with this tank. I made sure the pick up tube/filter was as far down as it could possible go and also made sure the float was at rest just above the bottom of the tank so when it says E i'll be damn near empty. Put in about 9 gallons of gas and voila the gauge worked for the first time since I have had the truck. The next day I had run to town and brought more gas back in cans, put another 10 gallons in or so. went to start the truck and the damn guage just sits below E now UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ground is good for sure, plug seems to be contactin good as well. My only concern on the tank side of things is the connectors they gave me to use to extend the sendin unit wire are those cheap blue smash down wire connectors. they work but always seem cheesy to me but it was all I had on hand so I used em. is it possible the gauge worked until the fuel level reached one of those connectors and somehow the fuel has interrupted the signal?

I would check the ICVR on the back of the instrument cluster. I've had a similiar issue in the past (gauge works one minute and then didn't the next)... Look closely at where it snaps to it and make sure the circuit paper hasn't cracked around it. And check the ground wire at the sending unit to frame. As far as your specfic question, I can't picture what your talking about in reference to extending wires that would have fuel reaching the clamps...

oops I meant those blue pinch down wire connectors, not clamps. When you buy one of those 38 gallon replacement tanks you have to modify the sendin unit by cuttin the pick up tube and solderin in a length of copper tube and you have to add a section of wire to the signal wire (since the tank is deeper then stock). I thought that maybe when the gas reached a level where it touched the lowest of the blue wire connectors it maybe messed up the signal to the gauge. I will pull the cluster out soon and check the circuit paper and the IVCR as you suggested. Lately I have had a case of the everytime I touch the truck to fix somethin, 3 other things act up.

if you don't find any electrical problems, it's possible the float is defective and has filled up with gas (and is too heavy to float).

pull out sending unit and ohm it out,you should have around 10 ohms in the full postion and around 70 ohms in the empty postion,i always check this before i put the tank back in,
good luck
