72 wiring question

OK, so I bought my truck, a 72 F100 302 3 on the floor, and the center pad on the steering wheel was gone. The horn was now activated by a large black button from auto-zone, and two blue wires running through my engine bay, and seeing as there are few other wires, i would like to use the original wires if at all possible. I know that the blue wire with the yellow stripe is for the horn, but do I ground it out or apply 12 VDC? and if so, where is the original wire, the only wire i could see going to the horn is yellow with a brown or black stripe, and i think that it has something to do with the voltage regulator. Any help would e appreciated, as the engine bay is rather clean and uncluttered, and I would like to keep it that way.

72 wiring question

Hi, I remember going through this before. The horns get power through a relay and the horn button is looking for a ground, not power. Don't have any wiring diagrams here but will search the archives for more info unless someone posts sooner.

72 wiring question

Thanks for the timely and accurate reply. It seems that the relay is bad, so I will get one from the junkyard tomorrow for a dollar. He has a 69 and a 67 that i can get it from. I already have the 69's dash, because it looks better and the brake light switch because it broke. And remember, grease your universal joints...look at my thread titled "transmission help" in the Explorer forum.....

as it turns out, the ground to the relay was bad. I pulled it off and cleaned the back of the relay and where it mounted. while i was there, I pulled all of the nuts off of the starter solenoid and sanded them, as well as the power connectors. It works fine now.
