Mystery solved
Thanks Tom for the suggestions. Paw-Paw called it correctly: I put in a new ignition switch this AM and it's like the problem never happened. When I went to take the old switch out, the two screws that held the die-cast part to the steering column were loose. I remember they had to come out in the cab swap and must have vibrated loose again. I used two new screws with fresh epoxy coating to install the new switch. I don't know if the switch grounds through those screws perhaps. At any rate, thanks to everyone who commented, especially paw paw for walking me through the trouble shooting.
