well.. im in the process of gather all my parts for my read d60 disk brake conversion and while im doing it im going to go ahead and replace the rear hub bearrings. other than slapping them into the hubs are there any other things i need to do? i know the front get packed with grease but the rears are lubed with gear oil from the pumpkin so i would assume that i wouldnt need to pack them. am i right?
hmm imay have more problems than i think then. if i dont drain the rear before i pull my axles gear lube runs out as soon as i loosen the 8 bolts that hold the axle in. anyone else have input?
im not being a smarty pants btw. now im just trying to figure out if i have more things wrong than i thought. didnt think anything at all was wrong with it but now that you mention that i may be looking at replacing parts
okiebronco, It's normal for some gear lube to run out when you unbolt the axles. At least it's normal on many D60s. There are two types of bearings. Some are lubed with gear oil, others need packed with bearing grease. Considering you start leaking gear oil when you unbolt the axles, I'd say you have the first type.
the copper ring is the gasket, !DO NOT! PUT ANY SEALANT ON THIS OR !IT WILL LEAK! get a new one if you can find it! i never seen to be able to find them
Hey okiebronco i have the D60 in my truck and when i swaped it out for another one i went in a redone everything bearings races and brakes .. on the D60 if you look at the shafts they look as if they have a pattern cast into the shaft that swirls around the shaft and im guessing thats how it lubes the bearings but i went ahead and packed the bearings on mine because i was thinking by the time the oil gets to the bearings they could have already gotten dammaged from heat..but the seals where the eight bolts are for bolt the shaft to the hub.i got mine at O'reillys they are paper but like stephenk said no sealant because then it will leak and i did put black rtv on there with the gaskets and sure enough it leaks but not enough to matter to me ..also where in oklahoma are you im in the okc area so if you close enough and you need an extra hand ill be more then happy to help out ..take it easy
* On a full floating Dana 60 (with the axle protruding through the wheel like a front hub), oil spilling out of the tubes upon axle removal is normal. You can reduce this by lifting only one side on the truck at a time.
* The bearings DO get hot enough to fail if you don't pack them with grease.
* The only axle bearings I wouldn't grease are the ones similar to the 9" that have an oil seal on the outter side of the bearing.
* I've been sealing my axle to hub surfaces with Blue RTV for years without leaks.
* Pay close attention to the thin, metal, bearing retainer ring with the bending tabs. If it looks worn, replace it and buy a spare.
I look forward to hearing about your disc brake conversion!
