I have an 87 f250 6,9 that has an electrical issue. About a month ago driving down the hwy I got a poof of smoke from the dash on the right side of the steering wheel. Every thing kept working so I said what ever an drove on.
Now I have noticed my voltage gauge is acting all funky and bobbing up and down when I use the blinkers and my trailer lights are wacky. I am thinking a bad ground. I looked behind the dash and could not find anything and I replaced the voltage regulator because I know it can cause some crazy issues.
So where do I start? Im pretty good with a meter but don't really know where to start. Thanks
An 87? Didn't those have a recall on the ignition switch due to the potential for them to catch fire? Might want to check into that. Should be able to call the VIN into any Ford dealer and they can tell you if that truck is affected and if any recall work was done previously.
Maybe it's just that I work on electrical stuff for a living, but if I saw ANY smoke I sure as hell wouldn't keep operating it until I at least had an idea of where it came from, and I damn sure wouldn't leave the battery connected if I wasn't in sight of the truck. Too many things that stay energized even with the key off. Not trying to scare you but I also don't want to see a post on here saying you woke up to the fire dept. in front of your house.
Every electrical device is made with smoke in it. As long as the smoke stays inside, all is well. When the smoke gets out, you have a big problem... even if you don't know it yet.
