OT - Fuel question

Just got off the phone with the local saw shop. My less than one year old ($6030.00) Honda mower had a stuck intake valve. They claim trouble was bad fuel issue due to ethanol degradation and the shop guy said that all of the gas today is 10% ethanol regardless of where you get it unless it is aviation fuel.
Any fuel related members out there that can confirm this? I was under the impression that it is the law that the pump is required to state that it is a fuel mixture if it is. I live in NE Cal if that makes a difference and it was Shell gas, not Rotten Robbie or anything like that.

Thanks,
Mike

Ethanol labeling requirements are state by state. California does not require ethanol containing fuels to be labeled.

Ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada

This might help. A vast majority of gas in the US has ethanol, because MTBE is no longer used.

Thanks for the replies, looks like I have one station about 80 miles away but I do get down that way fairly often these days.

In my state most stations have NO ethanol in their top grade fuel which everyone uses for small motors. Some stations have NO ethanol in any fuels and are very busy!

Ethanol is bad! The treatments work ok but they don't get rid of the ethanol, they just counter act it some.

Florida just passed a deal where the mandatory ethanol in all fuels was thrown out because of people burning up motors.

Ethanol absorbs more moisture than gasoline. We always run Seafoam in my wifes Tahoe,it doesn't seem to like Ethanol.

Mike, here in CT, I've been told by several repair shops that I use for my Stihls and my Scags to always use 89 or higher octane due to less ethanol. I never really bought into it until my BR 600's started dieseling on shut down. Started putting 89 or higher in the gas engines now and they seem to be running smoother. I'm usually a skeptic on that kind of stuff, but this ones working for me.

the 89+ octane still has minimum 10% ethanol in it, it just runs better because of the higher octane rating of the gas.

Legally here in CA they can put 10% ethanol with out telling anyone. A local place did some testing around here and found that most stations had 8-15%, other people report finding as much as 30%. This stuff is NOT good, it is causing all sorts of problems with cars too.

Thanks for all of the replies. Got some Cheveron premium and added Stabil. I was wondering though if a diesel additive like Stanadyne (I have a bunch of it), Optilube or similar would work for the lubricating properties or if these are for diesel only. I see that Stanadye makes a gas only additive but the diesel formula doesn't say one way or the other.

you do not want lubrication properties, you want water displacement and gas stabilizing properties.
that is why you need ot use a fuel stabilizer especially made for use with ethanol like marine stabil or blue stabil for ethanol.

In Canada the 87 octane can contain up to 10%, 89 up to 5%, and 91+ does not have any ethanol.
