I bought a rebuilt steering gearbox for my 71 F100. I've noticed it has a fair amount of backlash at the steering input shaft. This is even in the on-center steering position. These gearbox's seem to be designed to be looser in the far right & left steering position and tighter near on-center. How much if any play is normal in the on-center position?
I dont know how much play is supposed to be there, but you can adjust it to your specs. I'm not 100% on this, but I am quite sure that you should raise the front wheels and leave them straight ahead. Then loosen the adjusting nut and tighten the screw that is inside of the nut you loosened. DO NOT overtighten, as when you turn the screw, the gears mesh closer together and over tightning them will ruin your new and probably expensive box. Some one back me up on this....
My gearbox is still out of the vehicle. It is adjusted as tight as it can be and still has a fair amount of play at the input shaft. Backlash in the on-center postion looks to be about 5-8 degrees.
Yes, it's adjusted so there is some drag in the on-center position but is loose off center. This is the second rebuilt unit I have received. The first one had more slop than this one so I exchanged it but htis one still has some backlash. I should add that it is a power steering gearbox. I bought it from partsamerica (Kragens). It's a Cardone A1C277504 rebuilt.
I just don't want to put this thing on and have to take it back off again...
Oh, a power steering box, that makes a difference! You should have a little play on-center. Try this, in the on-center position, gently screw in the adjuster until you feel resistance, then back it out 1/4 turn. Now make sure the box does not get tight or have any drag going through the center position. When the box gets pressure from the pump, the play will go away.
