I had a wreck in my 2006 F250 6.0 recently. The right front wheel area took a hit and it damaged the steering gear box. Dealership body shop did the repairs and replaced the gear box. I picked it up and the steering wasnt right. It has a ton of slop, or slack in the steering wheel. I can move it from side to side quite a bit without the wheels moving.
I took it back and they kept it for another 2 weeks. They ordered another steering box and it still want right. So they then ordered a third box... and it still wasnt right. I asked them if they checked all the other steering components like tie rods and ball joints ect ect? They said they checked everything. They said this was all they could do and it may just never be the same again.
This is very frustrating cause I take great care of my truck. It has only 80k miles on it and the steering was perfectly tight before. So what else can I check? Are there other parts that I can check for looseness? Should I ask the dealership to replace other parts? Ive drove it for the past week and I just cant get used to it. It bothers the heck out of me. It drives like an old worn out truck now, even wanders on the road some. Please advise.
Look Into a redhead steering box, they are worth the extra $$. Most auto parts stores sell reman CARDONE china junk. I had 3 fail on me on my previous truck after the 3rd I replaced it with a redhead and the truck had zero issues with the steering after that. They are manufactured in the United States. They also add additional bearings and beef up what ford came out with.
