Anybody happen to know how hard this might be to do? I have a parts truck and the cab in real good shape... Mine, not so much (rust, dents, plus a a nice long crack in the windshield now).
Just tossing the idea around at this point. I have an overhead winch and should be able to lift the old one off. Aside from the VIN issues, just wondering how difficult a task this might be.
Thanks for the reply. I already have an overhead lift, so don't think I'll need to worry about needing extra muscle lifting it off.
I was more just curious about things like how many mounting points the frame I'd be dealing with and how difficult they'd be to access. Given the OBD differences between the 2 vehicles, if I'd have to swap CPU's or wiring harnesses, if the dash would need to be transferred over due to differences in switchgear & related plugs. Also if the engine or anything would need to come out (though I wouldn't imagine so). Etc., etc..
I put a new cab on my '86 salvaged from a '89. I think you'd get away w/o removing the engine, but carefully save *all* the wiring harness and computer from the old cab. I discovered it's best to label *every* hose and wire you disconnect and photograph assemblies for later reference. You simply cannot do enough of this, because once you go to reassemble it, the harness reminds you of that old Star Trek episode where McCoy is trying to reinstall Spock's brain and panics, "So many nerves, what do I do?" You can order on line a set of Urethane mounts to match all the attaching points to the frame. The old mounting bolts will require an act of Congress to get loose, so the longer you can soak them in penetrating oil, the better. For documentation, try to carefully keep the old VIN number plate intact, even if you have to bash out the windshield of the discarded cab. I don't know what the rules are where you live, but here in Ohio I had to go through endless Mickey Mouse with the Highway Patrol to get a replacement VIN number. I still get pulled over now and then because the idiot county recorder issued me a 2011 title and it appears I'm using bogus plates on the cop's computer look up. One more thing: There is a braided steel cable going from the seat belt mounts around a frame crossmember. If the old cab won't come off, look for it. Good luck.
