I'm finally in the market to replace my suspension with a complete kit. Looking at a 4" lift and staying with the current wheels and tires. I like the Procomp kit with their ES9000 shocks as the rear includes an add a leaf as well as a larger block. Any experience with this one or another you would like to recommend? Looking for a fairly smooth ride and not too stiff.
Coming from someone with a lifted truck, if I had a 4wd Excursion, I would've done the V/B or V/F code spring swap and been done with it. Having a 2wd truck didn't leave me too many options; being lifted 6 inches is nice at times, but it makes it difficult to fit the X places it used to, like the garage and parking garages.
I'm not right, I'm not wrong, I merely have an opinion. I went with my kit because it was all spring, front and rear, and used no blocks at all. If your garage has four panels, then no fit. Five panels, you fit. The lift is five and one half inches.
The leaf packs have multiple leaves, way more than stock, so the ride won't shake out your fillings.
Thanks for the input so far. The Ex doesn't get garage space so no worries there - the Bronco gets it all! I'm definitely looking at the all spring method and staying with OEM parts is definitely a plus.
Ok given that the Ex doesn't get the luxury of garage space, per the others and myself, I'd go with an all-spring lift. From the time blocks get involved, those are shortcuts that end up making you wish you'd have gone all spring. Lift springs are nothing to be shy of, I like them way better than OEM, my truck rides and drives better.
Being an ASE certified mech, you probably already know a few of the pre-requisites:
-A 4 inch all spring lift will more than likely require a caster/camber adjustment kit you can probably get your hands on easily.
-The best tire size to run with a 4 inch lift on a 4wd Excursion is 315/75/16. These will fit on the factory mags and won't stress the front end or hubs. I've run my truck like this for the last 6 years and God knows how many miles with no problems. 305s will fit, but won't look good, take my work on that, I come from experience.
-Something else to think about: since you tow with your Ex, I'd strongly recommend working regearing into your budget. If you're looking for the 4.30 effect, go with 4.88 gears, if you're looking for a happy medium for a 4.10 feel go with 4.56 gears, otherwise go with 4.10 gears for the 3.73 effect.
