I would like to determine what motor (size) is in the van. As I am new to diesel's in general I would like information on maintaining. I see on the dash a light that says "Wait to Start" and when it goes out I start the truck. Is this some pretesting?
I also need to fix the RABS as the warning light stays on all the time. On my 94 Explorer I could read the code using the "Check" light. I assume there is something similar for this unit.
Generally I would like to learn more so I can service this unit. I have talked to others who say "Do Not Run Out of Fuel". So if I do how do I restart?
The Wait to Start light, is the Glow Plugs warming up the air in the pre chambers (where fuel is injected) to start a cold engine.
Diesel fires by heat and compression, and use no spark like a gas engine with spark plugs to ignite the fuel. So it needs heat to start up a cold engine in order to make ignition.
Others that told you not to run out of fuel, is because these older diesels have mechanical fuel pumps, run off the cam of the engine. The engine needs to be turning in order for fuel to be pumped to the engine.
If you run out of fuel, you loose your "prime".
When that happens, you'll need to crank the engine over for ever for the mechanical fuel pump to pump fuel back up to the engine from the fuel tank.
Caution! DO NOT crank for more than 20 seconds at a time, with a 2 full minute cool down time for the starter....if you don't want to be replacing a 250$ Starter!
The engine you have a 7.3L IDI (InDirect Injected) Diesel, with the E4OD (4 speed automatic, with the OD cancel switch on the dash, just to the left of the steering column).
If it doesn't have the OD button, it will be the C6 3 speed transmission.

Is that also the clicking sound I hear after the Wait to Start light goes out and before I engage the starter?

Sounds like my old international when it runs out of gasoline. How about the fuel filter. I understand that all diesels have filters that need to be changed regularly?

Yes it has the OD cancel switch on the dash. I assume that this is for when I have a fairly heavy load on the truck to prevent the OD from kicking in.
Yes the clicking is the glow plug relay cycling the plugs after the light goes out. It cycles for about a minute after the engine is running to keep it running smooth.
Yes your fuel filter will be on top of the engine, to the drivers side, front, behind the A/C compressor if you have AC. That should be changed every 2 years or 20k miles, witch ever comes first.
And yes, cancel OD when you towing very heavy, or in hills. Or whenever the tranny goes in and out of OD.
