i am looking for a high boy ford. found a 74... what do i need to look for when i test drive this beast? im fairly vehicle literate but id like a few pointers !!! thanks mitch
What are you looking for in the truck? Show quality, mud truck, or somewhere in the middle? I just got done going down that same road in salty MN looking for a clean truck. My best advice is to be patient if you have a certain truck in mind for when it's all said and done. I had to look at a lot of junk and a pass on a lot of nice but overpriced trucks before finding one I knew I'd be happy with.
im looking for a wood hauler/mud/hunting truck. iv seen some things about a 74 that had a certain transmission with no 2 wheel drive. curious if it was a stock option, as i would like to be able to select between 2 and 4...
FRAME! make sure that the frame has no major issues, cracks, missing pieces, major cancer. The rest of the truck can be replaced pretty easily, but the frame or foundation is what I think is the most important. Body rot: These trucks depending on your location look and act like Saltine Crackers, you can and will see body panels that look like lace!
The rest is up to your desire. Mine ran, not well but it did run, It would not stop though, which meant I had to go back home grab a trailer and return, which took another $$ in fuel to actually get it home. I didn't care about the body since I knew where there were several donors in local yards which allowed me to basically replace the entire truck.
Drive train wise: the NP 205 is easy to repair, but heavy, and the NP 435 is the same so even a minor wanna be grease monkey like me could fix 'em, so check engine compression, plugs, and the grease layer on the bottom of theblock, cab, tranny and everything else!!
