Rear Brakes

I replaced all 4 rotors, calipers & pad sets on my daughters 2000 Explorer XLT yesterday and cannot get any fluid pressure to the rear calipers. The ABS light does not come on but there appears to be a few open spots on the fuse block. With no labeling to identify which fuse is which and no manual I'm stumped. I hope someone has some helpful advice!

welcome to the forum!

an owner's manual can be downloaded from the support section of Ford, but here's a direct link to the manual for your 2000 explorer:

looking through the fuse diagram might give you an indication if someone has pulled fuses to hide problems with the ABS system before they moved it on to the next owner (you).

FWIW, the Brake and ABS light should illuminate briefly when you cycle the ignition key to the "on" position, this is to verify that the system is functional when you start the vehicle. That would be an easy check to see if the fuses are installed as well.

as for bleeding the back, it can take quite a while to get fluid all the way through the rear lines. I just had to replace the rear line on an old pickup and it took forever to get fluid all the way to the back. sometimes just cracking the bleeder screw at the back and walking away for a while helps. gravity will push the fluid to the rear if you wait long enough.

now, all of that being said, it is possible that you have air trapped in the ABS unit. in which case you need to cycle and bleed the ABS pump to remove the air. in order to do this you would need a high-end ODB-II code scanner which is capable of talking to the ABS system.

if you suspect air is trapped in the ABS pump, i'd suggest taking it to a shop with the right equipment and paying them to bleed the system. it might cost a little bit, but it is not something you can do without the right equipment and knowledge.

not sure if that helps or not.

good luck and keep us posted!

on a side note, i see you are from Florida.
maybe peek you head in the Florida chapter and say hi to the folks there
