shoot a picture of the egr valve so we can tell if you have a position indicator or dpfe.
then we can tell you what to check. dpfe will be a actual flow rate measurement and position indication is a measure of egr actuator operation.
1996 is a unique year some truck powertrain combos are obd1(ecc4) and some are OBD2. might be the confusion with your situation. in fact as a consumer buying the factory manual only the obd1 was issued if you have an OBD2 system you would have been directed to a 1997 manual suplement. so don't get too constipated over the lack of info on the code we can help you solve this.
The big picture question here is why your truck's computer is throwing this invalid code. If more than one code reader is picking up this code then I would highly suspect your PCM is bad or someone swapped one in from another model. The EEC-V PCM can be "flashed " but I am not versed in the process to do so.
The only references to a Ford vehicle based P1135 I find are somewhat mixed but I never found anything that would make one think it is an EGR code. I have seen references to invalid or missing key signal (PATS related?) or Pedal Position Sensor A circuit failure. None of which are related to anything I am aware of for a 1996 Ford Bronco.
