Need some of that ageless experience. I am used to putting Super Unleaded in anything that I drive. Just got my new pickamup truck and I am putting super in, like aforementioned, but the local sewing club thinks that it will eat my injectors? Are they finally right?
The only thing higher octane gasoline has to do with engine performance is reducing the chances of pre-ignition. Usually, the higher compression engine, the higher octane you run. Some people think that high octane gas gives you more horsepower and whatnot. The only thing it will really do noticibily is improve gas milage.
Radio car talk shows indicate that using ANYTHING other than what the manufacturer recommends is a WASTE.
If the manual says to use 87 octane that what I would use.
Preminum is for high performance engines generally speaking....high compression....so I hear.
It wont eat your injectors but it wont help anything except the gasoline company's bottom line. If you dont need the higher octane you're just wasting money putting it in.
If you have a pinging problem it will help, because the knock sensor will back the timing down if it pings and it will lose power. But if that is the case, a good top end cleaner is needed. I have tried both and found no power gains with the higher octane. I do use it in the 5.0 Mustang though so that I can run the timing higher and make more POWER!! But since the timing is basically non adjustable, I will stick with the 87 octane on my 2001.
