91 F150 tachometer fixed itself???

91 F150 tachometer fixed itself???
So, for the 3 years I have owned my pick up, the tachometer has been operating incorrectly. It's never read the correct RPM's (usually low, about 500 for idle and never more than 900 while driving), and I've never been motivated enough to pursue the issue.
But today, I start up the old beast for the drive to work, and I noticed it reading 1500 RPM for the initial start up, then it dropped to 1000 for normal idle, then it fluctuated between 1000 and 2500 for driving and shifting. My current schedule has me doing a lot of driving, so multiple times in a day, my truck is being started and stopped.
I'm not so much complaining that my tach now works, but I can't figure out why it would just fix itself like that. I haven't done any recent work to my truck- electrical or otherwise. What concerns me is that this may be a sign of a potential short- but I'm not familiar enough w/ the tach circuitry to know what it would indicate.
