Fuel Pump Issue?

Ok, I have a 2004 F250 FX4 4wd 5.4L with almost 160K miles.

Sometimes, mostly when it's hot, and I go to restart it, it will crank and crank and crank, so I let off and then try again and it will start. Then other times I will have to do it 3-5 times before it starts, or it will start with real low RPM's for a second then cut out. I have been told this truck does NOT have a Fuel Pump Driver Module (My previous F-150 did). So I'm thinking the fuel pump is just temperamental. Anyone have this issue or replaced a fuel pump before? What brands, places, etc. are good to buy at a decent price?

I tried to look online and was confused about a "midship, rear, and center tank". All I know is my truck is an extended cab and has about a 29 gallon tank.

All help is much appreciated

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

No I have not, can that be done at the rail with a handheld gauge?

Yes, it can. The reason I ask is that there are a lot of things that could cause the symptoms you are seeing. Throwing parts at the truck without doing some troubleshooting is a waste of money.

I see what you're saying. Hmm, only reason I was going to do a pump was this happened to my F150 and it solved it. I will have to check the fuel press though I'll go buy a gauge.

Honestly, my first thought was not the fuel pump. I would check and clean the IAC, clean the MAF and check for possible vacuum leaks.

I have done all of that within the last few months. Appears to all be ok. That was why I was thinking fuel pump or fuel pump relay?
