Kingpin play: Vertical vs. Lateral?

Hey all,

I'm in the middle of a disc brake upgrade to my '66 F250 CS and I'm trying to decide whether or not to rebuild the kingpins ('78) while I'm here.

There is no (or very, very little) lateral play in the kingpins (horizontal to the ground) but there is about 0.020" of vertical play (away & towards the ground). Is this normal? Is this a sign of excessive wear that requires replacement? It looks like I could almost add a shim to take up the slop.

Thanks!

I have a disc'd 66 F250 too...
There shouldn't really be any play, that is where the precision machining and reaming comes in, done by a quality
machine shop. If I were you, I'd just do them while you have it all apart...get the old style pins, not the new ones...
they will last longer

My two cents,
Jason

Yea, but the bushing reaming is diametral. Am I seeing the bushing flange wear here?

All the kingpin sets I have seen come with shims to compensate for wear on the horizontal surfaces of spindles and I beams.

Ok, so I went out and removed my kingpins. It was easy. Maybe too easy? I've read it should take hours of pounding and heat but they both tapped out quickly with a framing hammer and small punch.

The pins look good and they fit the spindle bushings nice and snug on both sides. However, the axle bore on the right seems a bit bigger than the left. I have to slightly push the pin into the left axle while on the right the pin just drops to the ground (everything ungreased). I measured both bores and the right is about 0.003" larger than the 1.054" king pin. Do I need to ream the axles and install oversize king pins to get everything tight again, of will this kind of slop be taken up by grease? Thanks.

My king pins came out pretty easy as well...the only reason for beating the snot out of them would be an issue
like corrosion...if you keep the front end well grease...it seems none of the original owners did, then it shouldn't
be a big deal. It's about the spindle machining and the bushings they install!

Ultimately, it's cheap to get the reaming done, and the king pin kits are cheap...I'd save yourself the guess work
and just take the spindles and new pins/bushings to a machine shop and be done with it.

I'd change wheel bearings and races while you're at it too.
