4/03 6.0 long crank starts won't idle or rev

Hi FTE,

I have a early 03 6.0 witha long crank starts has a bad idle and no throttle responce. I've been reading alot of differant threads trying to figure it out but some people replace everything which i dont have $ to do or they dont finish the thread as to what the problem was.

I have a dashboss to try and help understand whats going on I have checked FICM volts KOEO and they are at 47.5 48 volts and the same when it does start.

ICP volts are .2 KOEO and .8 running
ICP calc psi 100 KOEO and 400-591 running
ICP psi 17 KOEO and 585 running but it isn't steady it jumps around

IPR 15% KOEO and 85% running I have just replaced it thinking it was my problem it id help a little but over all still doing the same thing.

I have replaced the batteries after having them checked one no good other kept needing a charge.

I'm not sure where to go from here I need to know what to check next and how.

Thanks in advance.

ICP psi seems low can you pull any codes, also pull EGR valve EBP and tube and clean them first just dont get the carb cleaner in the electrical side, and ware your saftety glasses that stuff burns like

The IPR% while running is showing a HPO leak at idle should be around the low to mid 20's maybe a bit higher while cold but no where near 85%. You need to do an air test of the HPO system. You also need to get it scanned for DTC's. You can have DTC's present without a check engine light. I think you can pull the codes with your Dashboss.

The truck has a egr and cooler delete on it and the only code that came up was a P2285 I think thats for the icp I unpluged it and started it to see if it made a differance. I will clean ebp and tube I replaced that a while ago when I was having trouble with the turbo. How do I do the air test? If the ball fell out of the pump is it fixable or do I need a whole new pump? If I do need a new pump is there aftermarket and are they any better than stock? Thanks for the help I know its a lot of questions.

From what I hear this is a good aftermarket pump for the early 6.0L, http://www.dieselsite.com/2003-20046...lpumphpop.aspx

Thanks that is great but out of my price range. To do the air test I have to put air into the ICP hole and open the IPR valve?

I believe cheezit to be putting you on the right track. My truck had same exact symptoms and it was the ball in the hpop. It can be repaired. Remove the pump tap the hole that the ball has come out of and install plug. I believe if my memory recollects I plugged mine with a 1/2" fine thread plug. But my pump only lasted about 3 months after that. I ran my truck to long with the symptoms and my belief is I burned the pump up running that long with ball missing until I could diagnose the exact problem. It had no power like yours but mine would idle and run just had no getty up and go. Then I had to go back in and replace the pump with new one. Good luck finding it if the ball bearing did come out of hpop. I never found mine, but I have had no problems since. I believe the ball bearing made its way to the oil pan and is there for the life of the truck.

I think you close the IPR, but you get the idea.

The 03 and early 04's had a pretty trouble free HPO system, except for the pump. The 05 to 07 had problems with HPO leaks. I think that is why the best guess was the pump.

I am wondering if you can repair the pump, just a thought.

Is it more common that the HPOP goes bad on the 03's? Does any one know what goes bad and why I did drive it a little before it totally quit. It started of as a no start when hot and gradually got worse.
I know its a big job and I don't want to tear it apart untill I know what needs to be fixed. Plus I dont have the $ to throw parts at it.
How do you work the IPR valve when I chacked the old one with 12 volts it didnt click and it had 5 ohm's. what do I need to do to make it close while its in the motor?

I know its been a couple weeks but I did the air test and couldn't hear any leaks. I had the IPR closed I heard it click and no air. I let it open and could feel a little air coming from oil fill tube. I don't know what to do from here. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks again.

Pull the cap off the oil filter and air test again

Do you hear air gurgling up in oil filter housing
