Someone on here posted a link talking about oil filters which got me thinking. I found out that the motorcraft fl-299 filter has the same threads etc as the fl1a. The FL299 is longer by almost 2 inches thus having more filter media. Anyway I didnt know if anyone here used them. I have a 80 2wd 302 and think it will fit but it looks tight. Also rockauto.com has em for $5. Anyone use them?
Also put this on here cause it has some good info. Talks about the actual guts of the filters and cross reference.

I'm very interested to find out. I've heard the FL1A works on the Jeep 4.0 engines too, which would be an upgrade to a filter about twice the size of the stock one...
Ive been using the FL1A which works great. Just figured might try and see if it would clear everything. Probably get an order put in try it out and let you guys know how it goes! Thanks!
I tried the Purolator Classic (L30001 I think) since Motorcraft is supposedly a rebranded Purolator, but I think my oil pressure is a bit lower with the Purolator. Next oil change I might try that FL-299 myself too.
I can't find the specs on the FL299, but I know the Wix replacement for it has a much larger micron rating than the Wix 51515. Before using the FL299 you might want to find the specs to see if it's the same as the fl1a or not.
Got the filters last night and went out this morning to try em out. The FL-299 is HUGE compared to the already large FL1A. Nearly 7 inches long. I was affraid it wouldn't clear the hole to get it to the engine; it did with about a half inch or inch of clearance. I ordered 4 of them from rockauto.com. I searched for the part number and ordered the closeout ones for five bucks, regular price was $10 (ordered several filters and other stuff to balance shipping cost). The filter box seems like the older style and even says made in the usa. The rubber gaskets seem pliable and soft. Pros for using this filter- takes more oil to fill it so you have more oil in your oil system, increased oil and filter size should reduce oil temp, more filtration, larger capacity for sludge.
That was my concern too. The pic wasnt great at showing the clearance in the other side of the filter. I have driven the truck a couple of days now and havent had any issues or wear. I did do a test fit on my parts truck too. It has a loose engine mount and I can rock the engine back and forth with ease. No issues. We will see in the long run.
