2010 F350

Hi All,

I am looking at upgrading from my 02 F250 to a 2010 F350, Does anyone know of any major problems or issues with the 2010 model or the 6.4L engine for that matter? Also what is the fuel economy like on the 6.4L Thanks in advance,

Matt

I moved your thread to the Aussie chapter mate.

I can give you the quick run down, but you are best served to go to the 6.4 forum and read up.

In stock form, they are fuel pigs. They had the first generation of advanced emission systems with diesel particulate filters, that had active regeneration - this essentially means every 1500-2000km, it will dump a whole lot of fuel through the system to burn out the particulates caught in the particulate trap. This means that a lot of them average in the 16+ l/100km mark.

The not so bad thing about that, is that with a tuner, you can get rid of that crap (emissions system) and really improve your fuel economy. And they have a fuel system that will mean that you can have around 650hp with just a tuner/exhaust - and they don't sound like an old semi truck at idle like your 7.3 will (could be good or bad, depending on your perspective)

Other issues they have had are gunking up of the engine/turbo's from EGR etc. cracking radiators etc.

The Auto trans fitted to them is a lot better than the one fitted to yours, and the rest of the truck is quite a bit nicer as well.

They fixed a lot of the issues with the 6.0l with the 6.4, but not all of them. (Head gaskets etc. are much better, but not fool proof if you turn the tuner up)

The other thing of note, is that if you need to do something serious to them, it will most likely be a cab off operation.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks big f350, I read through pages and pages of stuff on them in other threads and figured i would ask here too. I think i might pass on it as i recently found a guy that had one and he like you said had the cab off and the costs blew out beyond belief......might wait to afford a MY12 model.

To be honest, I would wait out as well. The 11+ have proven to be more reliable (by the looks of it), and get a lot better fuel consumption.

If you have access to a 2 post lift (to get a cab off), and aren't afraid of spinning spanners yourself, instead of paying $100+ an hour in labour, it still might be worthwhile looking at.

Was thinking of doing the same importing a (2008-2010 model) had a discussion with clay(riffraff) about running the truck via his workshop,he was going to do the DPF and EGR delete for me...

But now im thinking putting it off for another couple years and then going after a 2013 model love the dash on the 2013 with the hump in the middle with the big touchscreen audio/GPS/rear view cam so on ..

I also like the chevy Silverado sssshhhhhhh don't tell brian, but the front end looks like a nightmare if you want to do a suspension lift

I am looking at getting a 2011 SRW F350 Crew Cab long bed. I am in a fortunate situation that if I hold it for 12 months over here, I won't need to pay GST on importation, and I only need it to pass a road worthy (not be fully ADR compliant) so RHD conversion is cheaper. I am looking for a truck now, and will hopefully find a place to do a conversion here in a month or so. I'll write up my experience.

The Chevy/GMC I ruled out, because no solid front axle. I do really want a manual trans, and for that reason alone a 2010+ Ram was on the shopping list, but it looks like you need to rip all the emission stuff off/run a tuner to get reasonable milage, the clutch needs to be upgraded if you do run a tuner, and a lot of the other aftermarket stuff is more difficult/expensive to find for the Ram than the F350 - not to mention they don't come stock with a "proper" rear locking diff like you can get on the 2011+ Fords. I would like to have a Cummins engines for getting parts in Aus however (and finding a mechanic to work on it if I can't be arsed), and it actually has some room in the engine bay to spin a wrench.

There are a couple of places that are based in the US. But the problem is, from what I have read you can only use them if you are importing under the Personal Imports Scheme (i.e. it looks like you have to use an Australian based converter if you want to just buy an F350 in Oz).

The place I want to check out is: 4 Steer Conversions "right hand drive"
Looking at the videos they have:
Their work appears to be of high quality.

The other place that I have spoken to is:
US World Direct | USWD
(They have an office here - but the conversions happen in New Zealand) - they seem to have done more conversions, but they have a 7 month waiting list currently and you are looking at an additional 5k because you have to first ship the truck to NZ, then to Oz.

They are good trucks, but can only get them as petrol... i.e. chew through petrol (or LPG), particularly when towing.
