hey guys. i just bought an '89 f-150 4x4. it is bone stock and i want to fix that pretty soon. i would like to know what yall suggest for me in the ways of offroad performance upgrades and still be legal! i am not completely ignorant i know i am looking for probably:exhaust, intake, lift kit, and bigger tires
however, i am a senior in high school and a former ranger owner so what i am after here is the specifics;
what kind of exhaust and from who?
what kind of air intake and from who?
i dont know much about lift kits so any info welcome there
especially what lift kit from who and how much lift and what
size tires to go with it?
and any other info welcome!
i know this is alot but im new to the f-150 world and yall are good guys who know there stuff so please put as much input in as possible. thank you very much! also if you know the prices and a website link it would be greatly appreciated!

well with that f150 you've got a ttb dana44 up front...so i probly wouldn't go above 35" tires, also think gears when you jump to bigger tires.
from what i've heard skyjacker has got a good lift. if you want a solid front axle fabritech makes a good kit that will swap a late 70's solid axle dana 44 or 60 and it is almost a direct bolt in kit but the kit is expensive ($1,800 to start with the basic kit).
it all really depends on what you want to do with your truck. if your really going to get into hardcore wheeling i would personally sell the f150 and buy an f350 or f250. basically the f350 has a solid axle dana60 up front and one can be swapped in fairly easily to an f250(they usually have a leaf sprung ttb dana50) with the coorect springs, hangers, and proper amount of lift. if your not going to do alot of wheeling and just want a lifted truck then i would lift the ttb dana44 and swap out gears so the truck won't be such a dog with the bigger tires. but before you buy anything be honest with yourself about how your going to use the truck.
I would have to second lr in saying skyjacker. About a 4" or 6" but if you want bigger tires in the future with the 4" you will have to do some fender trimming or a body lift. But like lr said the stock axle probably couldn't handle tires bigger than 35" tires. But after some axle upgrades they could handle more hieght.
the dana 44 ttb will hold up to a 39.5 inch tire with no problems, ive also seen them hold up to 18-40's. the straight axle dana 44 axle joint are actually smaller than the ttb joints!!! the only weak spot i have ever noticed in my 44ttb is the slip yoke on the passenger side axle. when you go with bigger than 36's these will strip the spines every now and then,but think of at a a fusible link to keep you from breaking harder to change and find as well as more expensive parts! as they are very easy to replace
Without risk of constantly braking things, 35's is the limit. It really depends on your budget and what you want to do (sky is the limit). Skyjacker makes awesome lift kits for that truck, I have one myself. My lift cost me 1400, tires are 800-1000, gears are atleast 700 (including install/parts), new wheels, 250+....and that's just the suspension aspect. What do you really want to do with your truck? If you're very concerned about legal aspects, you'll have to check with your states laws but here in MA you can only lift your truck 2". That wouldn't leave much room for lift and tires so an F-350 might be in need.
