best 5.4 engine year

I'm not trying to start a big argument but my dad is talking about buying a Toyota Tundra as his next truck and I'm trying to talk him into looking at a used 5.4L f-150, so I'm wondering what model year performed the best. I like the new engines but all of the computer technology kind of scares me and he wants something newer so I thought the 5.4L was his best bet so I'm going to you guys.

An 08 built after November 07 or newer is as good as it gets on a 5.4L engine. And from what I'm seeing on prices, a new one with the 5.0L might be nearly as inexpensive with the rebates and incentives being offered. It depends on model.

'07s are good too, but the first plug change can be scary (I understand that the '08s have a redesigned plug & head plug hole, seems brown COP boots are more gooder to have?) ..... just always run Motorcraft filters and good 5W20 or 5W30 oil.

I love my '07, but '08s look near about same.

I agree with the use of Motorcraft filters, but I would only run 5w20 oil. The oil passages are so small in the valve train that oil starvation can happen with any viscosity thicker than 5w20. That is one thing that causes phaser problem on this engine as well as cam and follower problems. Many people have gone over 200,000 miles with 5w20 oil.
