I bought a 59' f 100 PU. The engine is a 223 (?) with a 2 stud valve cover. It has an electric fuel pump which has quit working. I bought a new mechanical fuel pump. The problem is that the only way it will mount is upside down. The wide part of the mounting flange and gasket normally point down on the 59 fuel pump but is reversed on the block. Looking in the Mac's catalog the only two six cyl. Fuel pumps that have the wide part of the flange on the top are the 48-51 F1 thru f3 which has a glass fuel bowl and the 78-79 300 f100-f350. The pump lever on the 59 points down and on the 48-51 points up. On the 78-79 it appears to be straight and maybe uses a push rod. There must have been some kind of swap. I'm not sure the block is even a 223. although the head must be. Where would I find the I.D. number on the block?
Kind of hard to follow your thinking there for a dumb guy like me. Upside down? The rocker arm won't ride on the cam properly? Do you have a new pump yet? The boss on your block has the wide part up? Sorry to re-ask but want to be sure to help you right. I would think pics would be your best friend here. The casting number on the block is located on the sides. I think up behind the manifolds on the driver's side and down near to the oil pan in the center on the passenger side but I may be all wrong on that. This will not say 223 though. If it is the original engine, which may be in question, the VIN number desination of "J", will be the fourth character in the serial number on your plate on the glove box door.
Caught a virus on the puter and just got it back. I brought up some pictures of 223 engines and the bottom of the glass bowl on the fuel pump was pointing up. The diaphram is shot on mine so I bought an aftermarket pump which has a non removable steel cover over the diaphragm which also is on top when mounted. It's the same in the pictures so I guess it's alright. I haven't mounted it yet. What threw me off is that I assumed the sediment would be falling to the bottom of the glass bowl and not on the filter screen. Anyway, with everything I read. I learned a bit about the engine. Thanks for your reply.
