No, you need a 4x4 transmission. It since the bellhousing is separate, you can use one from any gasser but the gear ratios are different. Some 460 trucks had close ratio T19's like the diesel but most did not. I'd gladly give you mine, but I'm still getting my ZF situation figured out and I'm not quite ready to swap yet. I'm up in the Flagstaff area btw
Ya I found 2, 2 wheel drive pickups in the salvage yard. both are 6.9 diesel's one's a 84 and the other is a 86. how about if I just grabbed the bell housing to.
The bellhousings are the same... It's the rear case and main shaft that are different. A 2x4 transmission isn't going to help you out. You need a diesel 4x4 tranny. I see them sometimes in the Prescott Valley U-Pick it salvage yard, but that's quite a drive. Phoenix is probably closer and more likely to have what you need.
Really? No 4x4 diesel T19's in Phoenix? That's odd... but not I guess, there are a lot more older vehicles out here in the rural areas. I'll let you know if I come across one, and if you're still looking by the time I do my swap I'll try to figure a way to get mine to you. Have you thought about a 5 speed swap or you just wanting another 4 speed?
Pretty straight forward, the ZF is physically the same length as the T19 with the bellhousing attached, so your transfer case and drive shafts work just as they are now. If you can get the ZF crossmember, do so and use that. If not your T19 crossmember will work but you have to move it slightly and drill a couple new holes in the frame iirc. You can use your T19 single mass flywheel, but you will need to buy the clutch pressure plate and clutch disc specifically for a 1987 truck with a 6.9L engine and a ZF 5 speed. Those trucks came with dual mass flywheels, but had pressure plates that had 6 mounting bolts (instead of 8 like the 7.3L flywheels, iirc). The friction disc will also have the correct, larger center splined hole for the ZF's thicker input shaft. Since you have a Gen 7 truck, there is an issue with clearance under the transmission tunnel, so if you can, get a tunnel cover from a Gen 8 brick nose truck, and cut a hole in it for your 4x4 shifter (Gen 8 trucks have the hole on the side of the tunnel, not in the pan). That's about it... single mass flywheel conversions have the problem of gear roll over noise, and from what I've read the best solution is Amsoil 50 wt synthetic ATF, overfilled through the shifter tower if necessary, and many add additional sound deadeners to the floor, firewall, and doors of the cab. Still, this beats the heck out of the diesel scream as it over-revs on the highway! You could buy a dual mass flywheel, but they run 600$-1,200$ and become ticking time bombs as they age. The two halves are held together with springs, and when they finally break you can pretty much count on a grenaded main case on your ZF. No thanks. I'll take the amplified clatter of the diesel torque spikes any day... and from what I read that 50 wt ATF (from Amsoil, it's for semi trucks) really does get rid of it, even without over filling. We shall see... I need to replace the quil tube in the best of my ZF's and have the rear case welded up. The 4x4 ZF's commonly develop a crack in the webbing just ahead of the 4x4 shifter mount. It can grow until it leaks oil out of the rear case. When shopping, also check for input shaft play. Hope this helps, and hope I didn't scare you off from a 5 speed swap. It's a fantastic upgrade if you can find one...
