I have a 1991 Ford Club Wagon XLT ... VIN =1FMEE11N7MHA75787 ... transmission code "T" ... 302 (5.0L) V8 ... automatic transmission ... when I accelerate slightly at ~ 45mph or at 65mph the tramsmision slams (down****) as if I flooded the gas petal ... does someone know what the problem is and how it can be fixed ??? ... thanks.
I have an 89 E-150 302 AOD. If I have the selector in OD at lower speeds and start to accelerate it will start to downshift. If I let off the gas before this downshift is complete, it SLAMS! back into OD. My solution has been to keep it out of OD in traffic and below 55mph. RPMs in OD at lower speeds are too low anyway.
I'll check that, but I think those silly things are just programmed to go into OD at too low of a speed. Also, it only does the SLAM! thing if I let off the gas before the downshift is complete. Otherwise, it shifts fine.
Yup i didn't think it would do it either, but a freind who was a long time ford tech and now has his own tranny shop here in Kelowna set mine up. No more power slam into od when you let off while upshifting.
Can either one of you (or anyone else) comment on the problem that I am having ? ... that is that the auto trans slams into a lower gear when I lightly accelerate ? ... thanks.
Pretty sure yours would have the AOD trans like mine, in which case the first thing I'd look at is the TV (throttle valve) cable adjustment. Never messed with it myself, but I hear it's very important for proper trans operation. Haynes and Chilton manuals both have the procedure.
If the cable/chain is out of adjustment it wiil cause problems. I've had trans that would go 3-OD-3 etc. at 55-60 mph. This trans is not computer controlled and I do not know of any other input in the trans. The cable is throttle related and could be the problem. Be sure the fluid and filter are changed regularly. Some of these trans don't take much abuse but they are similar to a C4 and should handle 302.
Thanks for the info ... I phoned my Ford dealer ... they were unable to tell me if I had the AOD trans ... thought that was odd ... it is a 1991 Ford Club Wagon XLT ... 1FMEE11N7MHA75787 ... on drivers door there is a sticker ... Transmission Code "T" ... their transmission person thinks I need a $2,000 rebuild ... but he needs to see it first ... I am looking into it more ...
Took the Ford to an tranny shop ... he checked the cable and test drove it ... it is an AOD trans ... he said problem is "intermittent kickdown not on acceleration" ... and to do valve body repair ($150-$200) ... does this sound reasonable ?
