I have a 06 f250 with a 6.0 that looses some coolant with no visiable leaks and misses on start up until it warms up then it runs fine, any suggestions, thanks in advance, Garry
Homade, look at the degus cap do you have the up graded one, also look at the heater control valve by the heater core lil grey line goes to it that screw will leak, check the heater core and hoses , down by the FICM on the corner theres a bolt the hose will rub on it, I wired mine back off the ficm. now for some scary stuff
pull EGR Valve with front end pointing down hill look for coolent in the Intake
You need some gauges Garry. There is the ScanGauge, hand held code readers that feature a "live data" function, smart phone apps, computer apps, stand alone shop equipment, and the dealership but it's very hard to do much without some way to "see" what's going on under the hood of these trucks thru the OBDII plug.
Are ther any white splatters or signs of coolant loss on top of the degas bottle? You can pull the EGR valve and see if there is moisture in the intake- that might indicate the EGR cooler has failed. That would likely be caused by a clogged up oil cooler- which we could check for with a gauge mentioned above. You could put a pressure gauge on the cooling system and see if it's over pressurizing- indicating EGR cooler or head gaskets. The blue hose to the EGR cooler is a common coolant leak that may or may not hit the ground. Look just behind the passengers side valve cover. The coolant may be sneaking out the tail pipe if the EGR cooler or head gaskets have failed.
The rough running when cold is common. Could be low fuel pressure, worn or sticking injectors(stiction), wrong oil/oil filter, failing Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM), bad fuel, or dirty fuel filters just to hit the common causes.
There are many threads here about all these issues, spending a little time reading would not be a waste of time if you are going to work on one of these trucks. The Tech folder has a lot of the main issues covered it's the third thread down on the 6.0 forum main page. there are some spreadsheets with a LOT of links to good trouble shooting info and part numbers etc. available on another thread in this forum. Just click on the link below and ask Bismic to sent you a copy of the spreadsheets: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...wners-216.html
Also, I would recommend posting as much info as possible in future questions.
Stuff like mileage, recent work done on it, service history or just anything you think might help -probably will.
It sounds like you have two problems that are often discussed here. I would look at the coolant loss first. Coolant is either leaking externally from a hose, degas cap, etc. or (worse) is leaking into the EGR cooler. External coolant leaks usually leave a white deposit where the coolant evaporates. Fix any external leaks first.
If the leak is not found by an external inspection, pull the EGR valve and look to see if the valve and manifold is wet internally. Wet indicates a leaking EGR cooler. This would be the time to borrow a Scangage II and use it to check oil cooler inlet and outlet temperatures. A high differential between these temperatures means that the oil cooler is restricted and that there is low coolant flow to the EGR cooler - this causes the cooler to leak internally.
The rough running can be as simple as the oil filter and oil that you are using. These engines require a stock oil filter cap and stock oil filter. Aftermarket caps and filters, especially with the wrong combination of parts can make these engines run very poorly. If the filter, filter cap and oil selected are OK, it is time to get the injector performance checked out. Dealers can do this. A friend with Auto Enginuity software can do the same checks.
Hopefully these problems can be solved easily. There are many folk here who will give expert advice since they have seen, and solved, the same issues that you are seeing.
No I'm good. Sorry I was joking with Homade. He has the problem with his newer truck. I prefer my old trucks where I feel comfortable setting spark plug and point gaps
Got a new and improved degus cap today as there is a lot of white chaulkie stuff around the cap so I will start there and hopefully that is the coolant problem. next is to check the egr valve, thanks guys, to be continued.
As long as its not puking ,the new cap will show the results, smell the coolent (diesel smell in the coolent is not good), get the gauge working on IPR, EOT, Coolent,ICP. look at rustys posts great info there rep him for me too. Dam I'm in rep moss /

That white stuff is from the antifreeze breaking down, I can tell you rite now that your oil cooler is probably plugged because of that. I have fixed many of these trucks and I have cut the oil coolers in half, you won't believe it till you see it first hand.
So as for your coolant loss I would suspect the EGR cooler first. You can pull the EGR valve and look for coolant, pressurize the cooling system and jack up the back of the truck can help when checking this.
I'm gonna try and check some of the stuff y'all are telling me to check but first I have to get HOMADE( my avatar) ready to go to tenn. for the F1-F100 Smokey Mt. Run on the 19th of June for 5 days so the 06 will have to wait, thanks again guys, Garry
Well guys, thanks for the replys but I no longer own the 06--6.0, I traded it yesterday for a 2011 F150, The wife and I were in Louisville and I saw the 150 so we stopped for a look see, a pretty good deal was struck and we came home in a new truck. I really thank everyone for their replys, Garry.
