The only one worth installing is a BPD external oil cooler.

Fully Bullet Proof Oil Kit

I understand that.... Just wondering if is really effective and how the cold weather affects them, can't seem to find any info on that issue.

Yep, had mine for about six months. You'll need the cold weather package or the oil won't warm up enough in the winter. In cold weather, my EOT takes a while to get to 180 degrees, but will stay there all day. Without the cold weather package the oil will stay too cool and thick and is thought to cause problems. It's nice to not have to worry about a clogged oil cooler anymore.

That was going to be my next question about cold weather kit... Mine is EGR free, is that going to be an issue?

Sort of. Mine is too, but I recently reconnected the EGR valve due to concerns of the cooling fan not working correctly if no EGR valve is in place. This is important in the coming months as the temps rise. If you get caught in traffic sitting still, you'll be dependant, at least in part, on the fan pushing air through the external cooler to cool your oil. You'll want that fan working correctly.

I left my Valve, just did away with the cooler....My fan works or at least did. Haven't pulled enough to get it to kick in lately but fixing to..

Same here, been too wet. This is way too expensive a deal to do unless you plan to keep the truck. I bought mine new and never plan to sell it. It'll pay for itself many times.

Also, if heat seems to an issue, could a person not put a 12 volt blower fan on a switch in the cab to push air across it if the truck fan hasn't kicked in?

That's above my pay grade. There are others here that can answer that better. My opinion is that a 12 volt can won't move any where near as much air as the one you have, turning at well over 2000 RPM. I doubt it would be enough to help significantly.

With the cold weather package i have to slip a plastic bag in the grill. Not towing and eot is slow to warm also. Not towing off coarse. Frankly i get 2mpg better with the grill covered daily around town though.

I can belive that. We went out to Fogg a few years ago in January when Tennessee play Kansas. I got a taste of what 0 degrees and the Kansas wind combined feels like. That drove me back to TN fast. I have to wonder though, whether your cold package is working right. Did it get up to temp easily with the original oil cooler? Until you hit 180 degrees, it shouldn't be going into the cooler.

It works fine. If anything the water thermostat is in question. Ran cold this winter. Really is cold only because it was around town on short drives. Not what my diesel was bought for. I could tell when the oil stat opened.
