2001 Ford Explorer Head or Engine?
Never through I'd be posting in the new(er) cars section. Usually I'm good with my old '86 f150, but my wife wanted this 2001 Ford Explorer 2d, 2x4 sport with a V6 motor made 11/00.
Well turns out when I bought it I didn't think of looking at the plugs, cylinder 3's plug hole was stripped and the old owner put an adapter in it. I thought ok fine, and when I did the tune up I just did the stupidest thing and redid what the old owner did. (Use an adapter with a different plug), don't ask, it was winter and I was in snow. Well it ran fine for a few months and now the "lovely" explorer decided to blow that plug right out, stripping the threading entirely. So I just ripped the motor down to the head and then found out about the dual overhead cam issue and having to pull the motor to get this fixed... So my question is...
Is it going to be better to get a new head, take the old one to get rethreaded and fixed, or to get a new motor? I can only imagine how the rest of the motor looks.
Now to be honest, I"m not a novice, and I'm not an expert, BUT I have rebuilt a lot of older engines, including my '86. So I do know quite abit but these new cars always stump me.
Any opinions and ideas are appreciated.
Thanks
If the engine was otherwise ok, I'd replace the head and all the tensioners, chains and sprokets.
If it was burning oil or had other problems, and you see yourself owning this thing for quite a while, then a reman long block would be a better choice.
There are some links detailing the cam chain thing:
