well,
i'm getting a new motor put in this week. saturday night i blew a spark plug out of the head and stripped it. the dealer wants $3000 to put in a new head or $5000 for a new motor. since the rest of the pickup in in great shape we decided on the new motor.
Welcome to the money pit. Short of driving the wheels off it will be around for a LONG time now. So when's she gonna be done? I've often wondered why the 5.4s are more prone to blowing plugs than the 4.6s. Aren't the heads basically the same or is there something that I'm missing?
If it's ust the plug blow-out and nothing else, you can fix it for a lot less than that. You don't need to replace the engine - or even the head - to repair a plug blow-out. Heck, you can repair it without even removing the head.

whats the point in spending that much? no need for the engine to be removed. most people will just use the timeserts kit. its a much better idea and the head does not even have to come off.
Sounds like she will be done tomorrow night for me to pick up. Not sure if it will have the reinforced heads but i'm hopeing that it will. Don't want have to go through this again.
How many miles were on the engine? Hope all goes well with this one! Gotta love the support you get here sometimes! New engine + new (engine) warranty = piece of mind.

You're exactly right.....that's why when my 98 had a cracked head a little over a year ago, I got a new engine also even though it had only 144,000 on it. It came with a 2 yr/24,000 mile warranty. I have about 7k of that warranty left yet. It's kind of nice to know that you won't have to worry about it for awhile. The way I see it the helicoil/timesert kits are a short term solution to a long term problem. Kind of like when my head cracked and I put stop leak in it and checked the water level multiple times a week. It's a lot nicer to drive something and not have to worry about when something will happen (i.e. blow a plug again). Plus this way I don't have to pull him across town again!!!! (smits03 and I are brothers by the way)
there was just over 137,000 miles on the motor. but i get a little peice of mind now it's under warrenty plus they put in new plugs, also got rid of that anoying engine tick and cold start knock that just abotu drove me insane. also is there anyway of knowing if it has the updated heads or do i have to pull a plug to find out? i would hope that with the motor being a remanufactered one that when they overhauled it they would have put on the updated heads. thanks for all the replys and moral support it is really nice to know that this has happened to others and i'm not the only one. it was a long week though not having my truck.
