Hey guys I am sort of new to diesel trucks and looking for my first one. My Dad has a 7.3l that is nice and gets incredible mileage, but I am looking for a 6.4 more than likely unless I can find a great deal on a 6.7.
My question is I have tried reading all I could about the 6.4, the thing that scares me the most is the fuel system going out and costing $10,000 to replace. How likely is it that I will get into that problem. Is there any thing I could look for when I go look at trucks that would show me any warning signs?
I have found a 2008 F250 FX4 with 104,000 miles for $26500 and a 2011 F250 FX4 with 140,000 miles for $28000. What are some opinions on how to decide between the two? Both are 4 door short bed trucks
I live in South Carolina and we don't have emissions checks or anything like that, and I am okay with deleting and tuning a 6.4. I will be using it mostly for interstate travel, and towing an equipment trailer about 10-12K maybe once a month.
welcome to fte. you're asking about trucks much newer than i like. if you haven't yet, ask your question in 6.4 section. they will be more specific. i'm 8 months into my first diesel and this site has honestly kept it on the road. 1995 7.3 with 255xxx now. and good luck in your search.
Nicky New Guy here. Has there been a discussion comparing the 7.3 and the 6.0 diesel engines and the advantage/disadvantage of each? Looking for a 1998-2005 truck. Bruce
i would stick with your gas trucks if all your towing is just once a month Clemson.
those 6.4l's are very enjoyable to drive, but costly to repair and just drive.they only get 10-12 avg mpg for the srw pickup setups.very poor.beware those who report mid teens over the hwy driving only.this isn't real word for most of us.
brucie, there is no comparing the two.the 6.0 was a massive failure.well known and documented.only those with massive banks accounts ready to spend thousands at any moment should be driving one of those, despite the few reports of them going fine.it's far from the norm.
the 7.3l's are legendary.back before massive power and super strict emissions really hurt the diesels imho.
