I have an 86 F150. I have a problem with the defrost/heater function control. The truck has a/c, so the selector is vacuum controlled. I tore apart the dash/radio/glove box, and I can see that while the truck is running, the vacuum actuators are working. But, no matter which position I select, the main vents are pushing out air. There is a very low level of flow coming out of the defrost when I select that, and an even lower level from the floor vents.
Ok, I finally got the search to work. I keep getting kicked out of the forum.
Anyway. My problem looks like it is the flapper that is actuated by the vacuum right behind the glove box. So, I will change my question a little.
Does anyone know a way to get to the defrost/vent door without cutting holes in everything? If I just pop off the top of my dash? Any suggestions? This sounds like one of our typical problems that include the fuel gauges.
You can pull the whole dash off and lay it on the steering column while you pull the black box off the firewall. Then you can open it and repair/replace the blend door.
ok look this is what you do beings that your problem is a $12 part that is connected to a $200.00 part its easy go to the junk yard if you havent already figured out yes dash has to come off the blend door is connected to the vacuum motor and to the heater box or belnd chamber and is non removiable there is no after market part that i know of beleave me i have looked you can get the chamber yet it comes with out blend doors right from the ford parts at any ford lot can they get the doors not that i have found they say go to the junk yard so go to the junk yard rip one of theres apart and go from there good luck oh and dont forget that the blend door is nonremoviable so dont brake it tring to take it out .
I just removed the duct box from behind the dash that went too the vents, and taped a piece of cardboard over the hole. Now I have the defrost, floor, and mix settings, just no vents now. I felt the defrost was more important. I have heard of people using small hinges to make the door functional again, I may try it someday. I saved all my old parts just in case.
