I'm finally done with the 4" Rough Country lift on my 77 F150. Now I need to change the steering linkage over (got all the part, just need the time) and get it aligned and I should be good. I currently have 32" BFG but I was thinking on 35", but I have friends that say don't go that big because you'll just cause more problems, ball joints, steering box, brakes, u-joints, etc. I know the truck will handle the bigger tires based on height, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. The truck is 95% street duty. I'd appreciate any feedback.
I had a 76 F100 with a 4" + 2" body lift.
It had 35x12.50s, a 360 2bbl, 3:50 gears and a manual trans.
It saw dirt and some rock use about twice a year.
The only repetative problems I found with the 35s was power steering pumps and ujoints. I never needed to change the ball joints during the 13 years I owned the truck. I did brake and bearing maintenance yearly and all was good.
I got to drive it last weekend and wished I'd never sold it.
Try a friends 35s to see if they'll fit. (remember, mine had the 2" pucks) If they fit, RUN 'EM!
When you get more $, I'll bet you start drooling over 37's on 17" rims....
Thanks for the info Big Dave. I may just run the 32" for alittle bit and see how the truck goes. I should probably put a new bed onit first and get it looking pretty decent before I worry about the tires. If that white truck in your gallery was the one you got rid of, I can understand your heartbreak...it was a beauty.
youl have plenty of room with the 35's and no trimming, run em....youl be fine....you might break an axleshaft or a u joint every now and then, but youll be fine.. people run 35's on dana 44's everywhere
i have 35s on my 75 with 4 inches of lift and i love them. i have just replaced the front axle u joints but they were 27 years old when i did so i dont know how the wear is on them with the 35s. i ran 38s on it for over a year with no problems.
on both race trucks we run 34 inch tires in the front w/ no problems at all. and ill tell you when a track starts to go away you need plenty of room. but guess what? they fit with stock height so i dont know why u guys are always worried about lifting. and by the way, we have a friend pumping out close to 875 hp, and he hasnt had a problem w/ the dana 44. just my 2 cents
my 78 f-150 4x4 has a 4 inch lift and 35's, it looks awesome like that, and fits perfectly. Don't know how it is on parts, only had it 2 months. But it fits great.

im running 39.5 inch tires and my 44 has put up better than my d60 has. just drive like you have common sense and that 44 will be good to you. btw i have about 30k miles with those tires on that d44 axle without any problems. i just greese the front end regularly and pack the bearrings 2 times a year. altho i could get away with once a year
i have a question for you guys, i'm farely new at this stuff and i'm wanting a 6 inch skyjack lift kit. i was told that after i put it on my driveshaft will not be long enough. is this true? and id so how cani get away from having to make my own?

Not trying to start anything, but what does he do with the truck? Have a TJ with 425{@rw] and went through the original 44 6 hours after install. A custom Dana from Dynatrac no less. Been doing this for a long time and have never seen a 44 stand up to much abuse. Just curious.

Badass, you do not need a drive shaft mod with only 6" of lift. The more lift the more angle. Alot of guys used to turn there pumpkins, but that just puts more stress on the u-joints,etc. Custom shafts are the best way to go, but you do not need them.Oh, and good choice with the skyjacker.

35's are okay on a 44, until you do any serious off roading. I have seen alot of them turn into shrapnel, on not to bad of a trail, on jeeps, let alone the weight your truck. Might just be me but i never thought a snapped axle shaft or a grenaded u joint was fine. Just my opinion from personal wheeling and you know what they say about those.......
