86 model A/C question

Alright fellas, just got done with air conditioning in school, talkin about r12 and all that good stuff, didn't even cross my mind to think about my truck, so these old beastys have r12? i have discovered that my truck has "dealer installed" air conditioning, i cannot seem to find a filter dryer, there are NO high side low side fittings.
And she doesn't blow real cold, at all.
R12 is a pain in the *** cause you gotta have someone "certified" to do it and its expensve, how much is an r134 conversion kit and has anyone had good experiences with any?
Anyone got info on my trucks set up? the whole dealer installed mumbo jumbo

I've had pretty good luck with the conversion kits. It's a good idea to replace the dryer when you do it.

Get some pics, let's see what you have there.

I've used the "id" (inter-dynamics?) brand kits for my 86 F350 and for my 92 Toyota. They work, but BE CAREFUL. The quality is total crap. I had one canister pop and spray out of the regulator head and would have frozen my skin if I hadn't been wearing gloves. The next time/season I went to use the kit, the regulator gage exploded and hit me in the face... Luckily I was leery from the first time and had on gloves and safety goggles. They are cheap and they work, but be ready for a little excitement!

My van has a 12-to-134a conversion kit and it didn't seem like it was that big of a pain. 134 won't be as cool as 12, but it's cooler than nothing at all. Replace the dryer, orifice tube, and do a flush, cuz i'm sure it'll be full of grime and moisture if it has been exposed to the atmosphere for years.

all my R-12 vehicles still have R-12 in them, and i WILL NOT be converting them.
the system in not designed for R-134A and will not work as good.
and if you are going to be working in the AC field, you might as well get your 609 certification, because you are eventually going to need it anyway.
R-12 is still readily available, and it is not that expensive.

All AC systems have charging ports, may be hidden or on the back side of compressor.

If you can find it they make an R12 replacement called Freeze 12, costs alittle more than R134 but alot less then R12 and is a legal replacement.

I have put this in many applications and it performs very well, better than R134a.

there are 2 plug like things side by side on the back of the compressor but they are just like thread in plugs, not plastic caps for like hi and low.
where would i find freeze 12? it isn't just one of those can style ones is it? i guess thats the only way to really charge it considering no one uses r12 charging machines anymore?

Ask your parts stores, freeze 12 is availible in both cans and 30 lb cylinders.

Sometimes add on and older systems had metal caps over the ports. Take a picture so we can see them.

i have factory AC in my trucks, not aftermarket .
the R-12 charge ports look more like screw on tire valves than the new R-134A clip on ports.
i want to say the low side is in back near the ac box, and the high side port is up front near the rad support. it has been a while since i messed with one of the old trucks ac systems.

That looks like them. Pull the caps, if it looks like a fat schrader valve you found them.
