I was trying to change the U-Joints on my 85 F-150 supercab longbed. As for the runing gear it is a 300 i-6 with a 4 spd overdrive standard trans and 8.8 rear. I cant get the 3 piece drive shaft out to change them because the bolts for the carrier bearing holder are striped and rusted. I cant get the drive shaft to side appart either. I need some ideas here pleaseeee!!!!
Thanks
Ben
Easiest way I've learned with the carrier bearing bolts being stripped is by cuttin or busting the little clip that are used as nuts. Then replacing the clips with self locking nuts after the change. The clips with bust real easy just by heating them up and if bolt is too stripped to turn with a 8-point socket is clamp visegripes onto bolts and by turnin the bolt the clip will either break or stretch enough to pull the pull the bolt.
The bolts are completely striped they are like round headed bolts. i was thinking about takeing the side mount gas tank and cutting the old bolts witha grinder and then putting new bolts and nuts on. Does that sound like a good idea or more work than i need to do???
Thanks Ben

If the truck still has the Factory Bolts in it. They Don't really have a nut on the back side. They have what I call a clip? If you try You can probably bust them without droppin the tank. I've Busted a few off with a sharp Flathead screw driver and a hammer. To me those clips are just a pain. If your good with the torch Just blow the bolt out from the bottom side thru instead of from the top side. just be sure to watch anything flamable near it.
Torch it or grind it and have a fire extinguisher and a helper to keep an eye on things. Try and keep the sparks away from the gas tank and shield it if you can. As long as it's not leaking all you have to worry about is the vent on top. Use good bolts and nuts to go back together.
Its a brand new tank that was put in about 6 months ago but i have to put new straps on it still cause the old ones broke b4 i got the new tank and i have the metal plumbers tape stuff holding it up right now. When i ordered the tank i ordered the straps but they was the wrong straps that i got so at the time i had to wait a week for the straps and i havent gotten aroound to puten em on yet. Any ideas whats best to put between the tank and the straps???? For a 300 dollar truck it's been great. I cant really get to the top of the bracket for the carrier bearing cause the tank is in the way from the looks of it. My makeshift tank straps aint helpin none though.
Thanks, Ben

I used some "1/8 rubber gasket material on my truck. You could use a strip of rubber out of an inner tube or something like that. Or even a piece of fire hose or similar.
Ok i got the tank issue covered now how do i change the carrier bearing cause it looks like there is a retainer on the bearing to keep it from comeing off. Do i need to break the retainer or does it come off????
Thanks Ben
