Hey guys..have a question. Won't be too long til I start the engine up and break in the new cam. I put in some castrol syntec in it along with Lucas engine and camshaft break in additive. Was wondering if the synthetic is alright to run in break in with the additive..or if I should drain it before start up?
I'd run conventional break-in oil for the first fire-up, conventional plus ZDDP for the first 500 miles, and then whatever you want after that so long as ya add ZDDP.
ZDDP is the issue - not whether it is synthetic or not.
For the cam swap in my 390 I ran Amsoil 20w-50 z-rod (high zinc) full synthetic in my 390 for cam break in, varied rpms from 2000-2300 for 20 minutes and it broke in just fine. Just make sure you change the filter and add a quart after break in.
I wouldnt run syn anything in a flat tappet, ever!! Delo 400, Mobil1, Castrol heavy duty rated oils and zinc additive for breakin. DO NOT HOLD STEADY THROTTLE, NORE BELOW 1500, ABOVE 2500...
I assume the NEW CAM got NEW LIFTERS ?
I'm an FE guy, but tear down my new lifters and review /reassemble. Test for bore fit, spin, travel. Then use a marker on the rocker tappet face under mockup. Manual rotation for VT geometry check, adj as needed (and this gets interesting on an FE)
OIL........ good flat tappet oil is cheap! INSURANCE!!
