The only way to determine that is to hook up a code reader to find out what triggered the code. Otherwise it is pure speculation and dangerous to your wallet if you proceed any further.

My jeep does that when the brakes overheat. It comes from the smell coming off the brakes. So when I'm coming down off the mountain, the brakes overheat and the check engine light comes on. After a few startups the check engine light goes off.
