I have a 08 V10 f250 4x4 with 206k miles. Recently after passing someone it started losing power and making a loud squeeling noise, that seemed to be coming from the driver's side bank.
Oil pressure and temperature were fine, but I kept smelling raw fuel. I managed to get it home, and everything under the hood was scalding hot, despite a normal temp gauge.
I checked all fluids, and found that nothing was mixed, and yesterday when I was looking it over the squeeling had disappeared but the poor performance was still there.
Any suggestions on where to go from here, drop the pan, pull the valve cover etc? I really need to get this truck back on the highway, so any help would be much appreciated.
Yes, and the noise sounded different than a belt squeeling, if that makes any sense. Its kind of got me dumbfounded, because it sounded like a tea pot squeeling and oddly enough included a hissing sound. Whats worse it has stopped now! just the poor performance remains. Could it be my torque converter?
This may be a stretch but what about the fuel filter?
With 200k miles, if its never been changed, could be that it's so clogged that inlet blew off under hard acceleration. My rig filter is almost right under drivers seat. So if it came loose, that would explain the smell of raw fuel, and possibly the squealing/hissing sound.
Well I have been driving this truck with poor performance since then and the fuel mileage has gone down 2 mpg . It makes a clicking rattling noise at cruising speed almost like something was dragging the ground....? The night it happened it wouldn't get over 40 mph then after a night and day of sitting the squealing went away, and it would get up to normal speed just taking longer to get there. It hasn't thrown any new codes and the exhaust sounds normal. Also it is still running normal temp and oil pressure.
Its just when I first got it, for a big truck it was really peppy. I only used the first inch of pedal for everything from taking off to cruise, and it never needed to downshift, if I had the cruise set at 70 it would charge to the top of any hill around and never downshift. Now it will downshift and rev to the moon on the slightest of hills.
Im finally at a point now where I can take a weekend and give the whole truck a going over. I have only had it since March and haven't serviced or really even stopped to look at anything, I've been to busy using the truck.
Im going to change the engine and transmission fluids and filter and, check the fluid levels in the front and rear diffs and t-case. Im also going to take all four tires off and check the brakes and locking hub assemblies.
I honestly wonder if my problem is the torque converter. If I overheated it passing that person that night. Would it have made that squealing noise? How would I check it?
Anyway sorry for the novel, its just kinda got me stumped and I wanted to provide all the details. Also I want my old performance and fuel economy back. Any ideas would be appreciated thanx a bunch.
I think you toasted your catalytic converter. partially clogging your exhaust. The rattle you hear is the pieces of the ceramic converter core rattling around in the exhaust.
My guess anyway. To check this, disconnect the exhaust ahead of the converter and go for a quick spin.
