Blown plug question....
Blown plug question....
So today was the first experience with a blown out spark plug on my 6.8L. It has 111k on the original plugs. I was out in the middle of nowhere and was able to put the plug back in and drive 180 miles home with no problems. The plug, boot, and COP were just laying there when I opened the hood.
What are the chances that this plug just came loose and blew out and it will stay in until I can change it? Would there be any damage to the threads in the head?
What do you guys think?

I had a plug come out and I checked the the threads with an inspection camera and they looked fine. I have heard that they can get loose and work their way out and not ruin the threads. I installed all new plugs and the blown plug torqued to spec. I have 6k on it so far so good. You are overdue for a plug change in my opinion so if you are careful with the change out and torque to spec. you should be ok. I think the blown plug, stripped threads happens when plugs are over torqued.
This is a very informative specialty site on this with a temp fix to drive available for sale. Emergency Plug Kit
I am on a fishing trip in Canada and had one come out about 1 mile from where we are staying. Found a shop 3 miles away that was recomended by two people and drove it there after disconnecting fuel injector wiring. They are working on it as I type.
Looks like it would be good to have one for insurance. If I buy one, I'll never need it and if I don't buy one I will most certainly need it sometime down the road.
