Last friday I was pullling my 4.000 pound camp trailer up to or camping spot. All the way up the freeway I was able to keep a good 60 to 70 miles an hour. in 4th gear between 2500 and 3000 RPM. On the last 30 mile stretch. (Mostly flat) I could not get over 55 mph in 4th gear and pedal to the floor. Then it cleared up and ran fine all the way home. I know the cat is not plugged. (don't ask just trust me) I forgot to mention it backfired twice on the way up.. Any ideas?? Truck is a 1988 F250 4x4 7.5 liter 5 speed. Everything is stock except the unplugged cat. I am leaning towards exhaust??
It is fuel injected. I ran the koeo and no codes I will pull the running codes after work tuesday. It's funny because it ran fine. nice and smooth, didn't heat up or anything. just felt like I was dragging a strip mall behind me.
I have been having an intermittent issue that sounds very similar. Sometimes no power to get past 55 in 4th gear pulling a camper, and even unloaded it feels sluggish sometimes.
Due to the intermittent nature, it seems it can't be a hard item like spark plugs or something. Maybe timing advance acting up? Maybe getting EGR when it shouldn't be? An intermittent vacuum leak might cause either of those. My koeo revealed nothing as well.
Due to the backfire under heavy load (pulling the camper up a hill), I bet it's a fueling issue.
Wait, was your fuel tank low? Is the hill steep enough you might have been starving the fuel pickup in the tank > Lean condition > back fire > back on level ground and now its fine?
Tank was over 1/2 full, Nothing is bypassed and the filter was changed last fall. I am going to change the filter again this weekend, when it backfired was when I was slowing down. Once for a sharp turn and the other time when pulling off the main road onto the dirt. When I couldn't get above 55 I was on a almost flat straight road.??
Thanks for all the ideas so far guys. I really appreciate it>
OK no codes either koeo or koer, Kinda stumped.???
Please define no codes. At the very least you should have gotten the System Pass code of 11/11 for KOEO, the same for CM display and once again for the KOER tests. Anything less means you did not pull the properly. This can be caused by corroded pins on the diagnostic link, a bad PCM and a few others.
