My 1999 F150 was running rough, stalling, surging, and sucking gas like crazy. Also the trans was shifting funny, and engaging late in the morning. Everybody said it was the idle speed motor, and the TPS, and the trans shifter set wrong, or the MLPS was shot, and on and on.
I was pumping fuel to the tractor and my brother glanced under the hood and laughed. The air inlet duct was pulsing back and forth as the engine varied and surged. Took the air filter out and it was partially collapsed. Less than 10K on a new one, and it was plugged.
We blew it out and pushed it back into shape, and now, not only does the engine run good, but the transmission works perfect! WTF?
So I guess tomorrow I get a new filter.
The trans shifts off of throttle position/speed and rpm so if it is struggling from lack of air, that will make it shift late.
Nice that it was a cheap, easy fix!!
Starting a week and a half ago my 2000 F150 4x4 5.4L started making this sqreeching sound as I decelerate at any speed. I thought it was brakes at first, but that noise changes when you apply the brakes. I checked and changed the fluid in my transfer case after seeing that it was black and runny, but the noise is still there. I don't know what it could be. I checked the u joints for slack and they're good and I checked the rear end just in case. HELP!!! I have 219,000 miles on it.
