Question Oil Cooler

I was under my 96 bronco today a noticed that two rubber hoses coming from, what looks to be my radiator, go to the base of the oil filter mount. Is this a stock oil cooler? I have never noticed this on any of my other fords that I have owned. Every ford I have owned has had 351. Was this cooler part of a towing package? My two other trucks were a 91 and a 94 and I swear they did not have this, or I did not notice it.

I just checked my 96 XL 302 auto and didn't see anything like what you described. are you sure it's not the stock trans cooler lines? are those visible as well?

No its not the trans cooler lines. I do have the tranny cooler on the outsude of the radiator/air conditioner. This is different I have never seen it before on any of other trucks.

I looked again and it has two hoses that come off my lower radiator hose. They go right to the base of the oil filter mount. Weird it is new to me!

Possibly an aftermarket oil cooler. Strange though that it would run coolant through it rather than oil through a radiator heat exchanger...like NASCAR and other racing heat exchanger type oil coolers. Is it added on between the filter mount and the filter? If so, it probably just threads on to the existing oil filter mount. Actually a pretty cool idea..no pun intended.

Yes greystreak, it is between the filter and the filter mount. It is square and has two hoses running in to it. The hoses come from the lower radiater hose. I think it is strange too. I have seen external oil coolers but never one that is between the filter and the mount. I was going to add a oil cooler so maybe I will not now.

If you find a manfacturer's stamp or number on it let us know. Would be interesting to know who makes it and even better just how well it works. Oil temp guage would need to be employed for that I suppose.

Oil Cooler

I know in the past that trans coolers were built into the radiator but I am not sure if this is the case with yours.

the radiator hose to oil filter issue has me confused to be sure.

pics would be helpful.....

Oil Cooler

Crater joe,
I have a tranny cooler, it is external in front of my air conditioing condensor, also the lines run through my radiator and the external cooler . This is between my oil filter and engine block it has two rubber hoses coming from the lower radiator hose. the lower radiator hose has a piece in the center that the two hoses hook to. It looks stock. The only thing it could be is a oil cooler I think. Crater did you look to see if you have one on your 96?Take a look, I to have a 96. curious as hell

It's the factory oil cooler. Cold water from the lower radiator hose goes out thru one of the small hoses to the heat exchanger between the block & filter, then returns in the other hose. My '96 has one, too. Be sure to use the right filter.

Click on my previous post where it says "My '96". The filter for the oil cooler setup is much shorter than the normal FL-1A.

Oil Cooler

I just went out and looked again. Other than the normal trans lines to the stock ,built-into-the-radiatore-core trans cooler, I have no such lines running from the lower hose to the oil filter base.
My Bronco is a former gov't issue unit and bone stock at that so this may be somthing of an option.

I wonder how such a setup would work to dump heat from the motor oil, it seems that the volume would be on the small side,
Could this be some sort of oil heater?

Oil Cooler

It is a oil cooler I found out. Part of a cooling package for towing. Steve 83 has one on his 96 also. It has coolant flow through the heat exchanger to cool the oil.
