Has anyone done one yet? There is a series of a company who is posting progress on youtube who is taking a 79 fseries and a 7.3 from an old excursion and marrying the two together. Has anyone been able to put one together yet? In the YouTube version there are a lot of mods and I am not sure if all or why all were nesassary. I wanted to see if all of the hacking was really needed?
A lot of it is needed. Takes a lot of work to wedge a 7.3 into one of these, seen it done a couple times. Need to cut the floor and firewall for turbo downpipe clearance. Not going into full detail on what needs down, let you figure that out on your own. But last friend who did it ended up using the whole 97 dash in his 70 to make everything work easier.

That is one of my questions does the floor and firewall have to be cut or can the turbo be relocated?
Do you have a pic of the dash? Did he mod the late model cluster to fit in the old instrument bezel or did he cut the old dash to make the modern cluster fit? Did he have do put in a chevy steering box like they did in the video above?
No he literally put the 97 dash in the truck, everything the whole dash. You get in the cab and its like you are in a 97. The abs works, no check engine lights its as close to factory as it can be but it still 70's frame and body.
Pretty sure you cant relocate turbo. what year powerstroke are you planning on using? 95- 97 7.3 or a super duty? There are some differences. Yes the firewall needs work done to it. The stock downpipe on 97s are crushed from the factory to fit the firewall. That's one of the cheapest ways to get more power out of one, hit the firewall with a hammer till a round pipe fits.
There is also the electrical to deal with. The powerstrokes are primarily computer controlled. If you can get a whole donor truck, you should be in better shape.
Have you considered doing the IDI engine or a Cummins? Get yourself an IDI block and do the correct mods, you can run a turbo (or even a twin) and make lots of power. Everything on it is mechanical too, so there is very little wiring.
The Cummins swap is far more common than the PS swap, and you'll find a ton of information. Engines are easy to come by, tons of mods out there for em, and tons of transmission options.
So it's not impossible, but there are easier swaps to do.
Forgot bout the steering box. He used a 78-79 box on his truck, in fact he did use an entire 79 frame, reason is for the fuel tank and the 10.25 rear end bolted right in that way. That crap in the video about the narrow and wide frame is stupid because the frames are the same in the front, its the rear that's different.
Yes the electrical is a problem, which is the reason the 97 dash was fitted into the 70 cab, with all the gauges and everything else working as it should.

I've got a 95 e350 as the doner. Did he have to use the rear end out of the doner truck? Mine has the speed sensor in the rear housing, and thin I will have to use that D-60. Unless there is some way around that speed sensor.

We took a van in on trade it only has 180k on it but the body is trashed. The motor still pulls really well does not smoke nor is there an excess of blowby. The only thing wrong with the van mechanically was the Trans has no OD.
So I have this whole van to use. I know of the other swaps I just like the sound and availability of the 7.3p/s.

Yeah If I see him I can get pics, its car cruise season so he will be around. He used the 10.25 out of the donor truck for the rearend for the speed sensor.
All you gotta do to the rear is change the spring mount locations on the axle but you don't wunna warp or weaken it when welding back on. If you had an 80 or later frame pretty much everything would be bolt on with not too much modifications but ford just HAD to change everything to RUIN universability.
And as something to show its possible my stepdad put a 351w in a jeep wrangler and had to convert everything to wrk with the carb(from FI) and he was combing a ford wiring set up with a jeep wiring setup and it runs and is 100% perfect. Even has AC still
