A guy I work with is trying to get a little better at math so he can get through college. He needs help... Any suggestions for apps of this type that you may have had success with? Simple math.
Simple, basic math with and without variables. The guy says he doesn't know how to work with variables, they confuse him.. So I wrote on a piece of paper:
2 + x = 10. He immediately said "8"
Ok, so you can figure out variables.
"No. I just know that 2 + 8 = 10."
So I told him to isolate the variable, and showed him how. He didn't really get that so much, but I think he can. Now I'd like to point him to an app of some kind so he can learn a little more. For me to teach, I'd have to get back to the basics, myself.
Just my opinion, but he needs a little tutoring to go with some practice.
I don't know what he's going after, but a lot of degrees require at least some reasonable algebra ( that's what he's struggling with).
There are usually students around colleges who will do a lttle tutoring for a few bucks. I think that a lot of colleges have programs to put student and tutor together.
I suspect that once he gets the concept that a variable is just something that you use to identify the unknown number, he'll do all right. But, I do believe that human help will be the best.
Just for the record, Einstein was supposed to have trouble with algebra until someone ( his uncle I believe) got him on the concept of 'hunting for x'.
