My 1975 300 6cyl has a slight stumble and I thought I'd check the fuel pressure. I installed a new gauge just before the carb as directed. It reads just over 4 lbs, and also it fluctuates a little with the engine idling. Does this sound right?
If you look down the throat ( engine off ) and manually work the throttle you should see the pump squirt fuel . Ck that the base is tight also . Carter carbs have a habit of working loose with time .
Just so I understand what I'm up to here, how is the check to see if the pump is squirting fuel when I work the throttle related to my problem of stumbling when at idle?

Acelerator pump will not cause a stumble at idle . But will at throttle tip in . By stumble , do you mean miss ?
I would start with the basics , timing , tune up condition ( plugs wires cap ect ) Yes ck for vac leaks . A compression test for good measure . Oh , and ck that the carb is not lose , that would be a vac leak . the carters loosen up in the middle to base area and will cause issues .
I've checked the timing and I replaced the cap, rotor, wires, plugs a while back when I bought the vehicle. But I will check for vac leaks, including the carb base.
Thanks
